Location: Cardiff (office-based)
Salary: £35,000–£45,000, depending on experience
Start date: Early January 2027
About the Role
Mon Geotech is a growing geotechnical consultancy looking for an Engineer or Engineering Geologist to join our team in Cardiff in early January 2027.
This is an opportunity to work directly with the company’s founder, a Chartered Civil Engineer, gaining hands-on experience across the full lifecycle of geotechnical projects. From planning ground investigations and interpreting site data to undertaking geotechnical design and preparing technical reports, you’ll be involved in a varied range of work from day one.
As a small, engineer-led consultancy, we offer something different from a larger organisation. You won’t be confined to one area of a project or spend your time carrying out repetitive tasks. Instead, you’ll lead and manage defined packages of work, develop your technical skills and gain a clear understanding of how projects are delivered from start to finish.
You’ll benefit from direct, one-to-one mentoring, with the opportunity to contribute ideas, develop your expertise and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of the business.
What You’ll Be Doing
Your work will cover a broad range of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology activities, including:
- Ground investigation: Planning and specifying investigations, supervising site works and reviewing factual ground investigation data.
- Geotechnical design: Carrying out calculations and design work for foundations, retaining walls, slopes and earthworks, with appropriate checking and technical support.
- Ground assessment: Interpreting soil and rock parameters using site investigation and laboratory test results.
- Technical reporting: Preparing desk studies, interpretive ground investigation reports and geotechnical design notes.
- Calculation tools: Developing and using engineering calculation tools, including spreadsheets and Python.
- Business development and operations: Supporting activities such as tendering, invoicing, internal procedures and client communications.
The role offers a balance of technical problem-solving, practical ground engineering and exposure to the commercial side of running a consultancy.
What We’re Looking For
We’re interested in someone who has a sound technical foundation, enjoys understanding how the ground behaves and wants to develop into a confident, capable geotechnical professional.
We would be particularly interested in candidates with:
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Geology, Engineering Geology or a related discipline. An MSc in Geotechnics or Engineering Geology would be beneficial but is not essential.
- Relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, ground investigation or a related consultancy or contracting environment.
- A solid understanding of soil and rock mechanics and how it is applied to geotechnical design.
- An analytical, curious approach to engineering problems and a willingness to ask questions and learn.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate technical documents.
- A full UK driving licence.
- The ability to work in person from our Cardiff office.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who takes pride in their work, pays attention to detail and is motivated to continue developing their technical knowledge and professional experience.
What We Offer
We want you to develop your skills, build your professional credentials and enjoy being part of a growing consultancy.
Our benefits include:
- Competitive salary: £35,000–£45,000, depending on experience.
- Direct technical mentoring: Day-to-day guidance from a Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE) and UK Registered Ground Engineering Professional.
- Chartership support: Guidance and support towards professional qualification through the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or the Geological Society of London.
- Enhanced pension: Mon Geotech matches pension contributions up to 5%, with the maximum increasing by 1% each year of service to 10%.
- Generous annual leave: 26 days’ holiday, including one day to be taken within two weeks of your birthday, plus bank holidays.
- Holiday flexibility: The option to buy or sell up to five days of annual leave each year and swap bank holidays for alternative days.
- Enhanced family leave: Enhanced parental and adoption leave.
- Professional development: Reimbursement of one annual professional subscription to the ICE, Geological Society of London or IO3M.
- Varied technical work: Exposure to a broad range of ground engineering challenges and design projects.
- A voice in the business: The opportunity to contribute ideas, develop professionally and play an active role in a growing consultancy.
